Nicole Kidman's movie Trespass (2011)

Posted in : Movies

(added few months ago!)

What’s in a home invasion movie? Generally speaking, it’s a subgenre that should be rife with tension and suspense, yes? The very idea of hostile strangers invading your most intimate surroundings is a fairly popular one as films like The Strangers, Hostage, Kidnapped and Funny Games have recently shown. Naturally, it taps into a pretty basic fear: What would you do if people broke into your home and wanted to hurt the ones you love? Would you be complacent? Too terrified to react? Unleash your surprising inner savagery to defend your turf? What shocks most in Joel Schumacher’s Trespass isn’t what happens throughout, it’s that it’s a resounding bore all the way.

Nicole Kidman's movie Trespass (2011)

It’s a thriller where nothing thrills. There’s no escalating sense of suspense, and tension is lacking from the get-go. Instead it’s a one-note bore that never escalates, never tightens and certainly almost never entertains. In the director’s chair, Joel Schumacher seems incapable of making any of this seem scary. Our resident thugs brandish guns, bark orders and pace hurriedly back and forth. Sure, they occasionally grab one of our two stars and make some really idle threats through mashed teeth to indicate they’re really serious, but it doesn’t go anywhere. Instead these moments play out again and again over an interminable 85 minutes. In Trespass the cards are sprawled out on the table from the very beginning, and as such, it has no where to go.

That’s because it puts too much faith in “Dead Like Me” scribe Karl Gajdusek’s story. A screenplay that thinks it has some real surprises in store for an audience, when the reality offers nothing at all. It spends the majority of the film making us think that Nicole Kidman’s character is involved in an affair with one of the robbers (the awful Cam Gigandet), making her an unsympathetic heroine for the duration. It doesn’t turn out to be true, however, with the reason behind the misdirection being even dumber and more obvious. The script plays around with everyone like this, indicating that each character has something to hide, and attempts to pass off these “revelations” as third-act shockers. When the most surprising one is, ”Hey, I got fired a few months ago,” there’s a real problem here.

Just about the only reason to slog through this disaster is for an amazingly bizarre acting turn from Nicolas Cage. His nasally performance is an odd mixture of restraint and frenzy. Nouveau shamanic rears its head in a few choice moments where Cage verbally assaults the attackers in a profane-laden diatribe, screaming out ”you fuck shits!” and similar gems at the top of his lungs. And later his rejection of wife Nicole Kidman’s apology yields the following: ”I’m a cuckold. Your filthy lust invited this.” This stuff would’ve worked better had Cage been the focus, but he feels like an afterthought in a climax that gives everyone more to do than him. So much so that he disappears for what feels like long chunks of time. Big mistake.

Speaking of big mistakes…Nicole Kidman opted to follow up one of the greatest performances of her career (the brilliant Rabbit Hole) with this. Hers is easily the best performance of the bunch, navigating banal dialogue and pathetic “surprises” as if this were a much better film. I’ve been a Kidman fan for as long as I’ve loved movies, and I’ll watch anything she does. But she can’t save this material or even elevate it. Instead it’s hard not to feel embarrassed for the only person who brought their ‘A’ game to this tripe.

Trespass doesn’t work at all. Best thing Schumacher could’ve done was load his climax with gruesome violence as an apology for the stagnant proceedings. But it takes forever for the family to fight back, and when they do, it’s as unsatisfying as everything else. That the thieves are mostly destroyed by lame in-fighting is the final straw. By the time we get around to Cage taking a nail gun to his attacker, it’s too little too late. It’s where things should’ve kicked into high gear; instead it’s a missed opportunity. Just like everything else in this Trespass.

Kidman hopes to play artist Lili Elbe before and after transition in a film titled The Danish Girl. Her production company Blossom Films is backing the project. However, three big-name actresses have pulled out of the role of Elbe’s wife. Gwyneth Paltrow and Charlize Theron were both lined up for the part but said they had other commitments.

Rachel Weisz has now pulled out too, the Mail on Sunday reports. A source told the newspaper: “Nicole initially approached Gwyneth Paltrow to play the artist’s wife and fellow artist Gerda Gottlieb, but she was too busy. Charlize Theron then took the role but had to pull out because of scheduling conflicts.

“Rachel Weisz signed up last year but now she’s pulled out and the whole production has been thrown into disarray. Nicole is still determined to make this film, so she’s gone back to the drawing board.”

Elbe, born Einar Wegener, was one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment and had the surgery in the 1930s. It is thought she may have been intersex or had Klinefelter’s Syndrome. She died in 1931 of complications after her fifth surgery. The movie’s script is based upon David Ebershoff’s novel The Danish Girl and will be directed by Tomas Alfredson.

Nicole Kidman’s movie about the world’s first man to have a sex change has been shelved. The Danish Girl, a planned £10million biopic based on the bestselling book about artist Lili Elbe, who was born a man, Einar Wegener, should have started shooting in Germany last month. Nicole, 44, was due to star as Lili/Einar, but first director Lasse Hallström and then co-star Rachel Weisz pulled out of the movie.

Nicole’s production company Blossom Films was behind the project, but casting and financial problems have caused the film to stall. ‘Nicole initially approached Gwyneth Paltrow to play the artist’s wife and fellow artist Gerda Gottlieb, but she was too busy. Charlize Theron then took the role but had to pull out because of scheduling conflicts. ‘Rachel Weisz signed up last year but now she’s pulled out and the whole production has been thrown into disarray,’ says a movie mole. ‘Nicole is still determined to make this film, so she’s gone back to the drawing board.’ A spokesman for the star said: ‘There are no updates to report at this time.’

Nicole Kidman in 'Trespass,' Tom Hanks gets 'Extremely Loud'

Wealthy married couple Nicolas Cage and Nicole Kidman are the victims of a home invasion, and the attackers (including Cam Gigandet) know some of their secrets.

Nicole Kidman in 'Trespass,' Tom Hanks gets 'Extremely Loud'

Grade: B-. It could be sleazy fun, but it looks like it's aiming for high drama. The fact that Joel Schumacher, who arguably hasn't made a good film in over a decade, is directing doesn't inspire much confidence. And Cage looks to be oddly restrained.

Nicole Kidman's Best Movies

Posted in : Gossips, Movies

(added few months ago!)

1. To Die For (1995)
"You aren't really anybody in America if you're not on TV." So says Kidman as a wannabe newswoman whose ethics are as paper-thin as her personality. When her fifteen minutes of fame are jeopardized by her clueless hubby (Matt Dillon), she seduces a high-school burnout (Joaquin Phoenix, pre-beard) and persuades him to make her a widow. Kidman may play a soulless character in this black comedy, but she's deadly funny.

Nicole Kidman's Best Movies

2. The Others (2001)
This throwback to the fog-drenched gothic horror movies of yore makes M. Night Shyamalan's Sixth Sense look like child's play. Kidman is a mother who's trying to get to the bottom of the haunting at her spooky country abode. As the screws of the plot turn, the twists get more creepy and tense, which produces shocking end-of-movie revelations.

3. The Hours (2002)
You know that adage about beautiful actresses having to downgrade their looks to win an Oscar? Well, it's not exactly disproved by this critically acclaimed drama, for which Kidman took home Best Actress as a dowdy Virginia Woolf. But even without the prosthetic nose, Kidman's performance as the novelist is still transformative. Depressed, brilliant, irreverent, enervating -- she's a complex character if there ever were one.

4. Dogville (2003)
On the run from gangsters, Kidman's damsel in distress flees to a small town that's hardly a safe haven. With minimal sets and extreme situations, she has nothing to rely on but her acting ability. That's all she needs. The star gives a master class on her craft as she's put through the wringer by her director, famed cinematic sadist Lars von Trier.

5. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Hey, she can sing too! Kidman plays Satine, a dancer who begins a doomed romance with starving young artist Christian (Ewan McGregor). Their love story is melodramatic and bawdy but oddly touching. This kaleidoscopic musical from Baz Luhrmann feels like it's on Benzedrine (or the nineteenth-century Francophone equivalent), but it was one of Kidman's biggest commercial successes.

Honorable Mentions

6. Flirting (1991): Kidman plays the resident mean girl at an Australian boarding school in this sweet coming-of-age story.

7. Eyes Wide Shut (1999): None of the rumored sex scenes is evident in the final cut, but Kidman was still mesmerizing in a role then familiar to her: Tom Cruise's wife.

8. Dead Calm (1989): This sea thriller showcased not only her beauty but also her ability to portray a character with psychological depth.

9. Margot at the Wedding (2007): Noah Baumbach's family drama won't make you feel great about the human race, but it does have a stellar performance from you-know-who.

10. Birth (2004): Kidman channels her inner Mia Farrow as a New Yorker who thinks her dead husband has been reincarnated in the body of a little boy.

People were surprised when actress Nicole Kidman and country singer Keith Urban hooked up, but even more so when they married in 2006. They seemed an unlikely couple - Kidman was living the glamorous life of a world-famous actress and former wife of superstar Tom Cruise.

Kalki would like to be Nicole Kidman

Posted in : Gossips

(added few months ago!)

After Chanda, teenager-turned-prostitute in Dev. D and simple foreigner-in-desi-settings Ruth in The Girl In Yellow Boots, Kalki Koechlin wants to go glam-doll international with her latest look. Koechlin has asked her stylists to style her after Hollywood bombshell Nicole Kidman in her forthcoming film, reports DNA. The ZNMD actor wants to look like Kidman from Moulin Rouge. “She told us that she ‘d like to look like Nicole in the song Zig Zag Zindagi, telling her stylists to refer to a song in Moulin Rouge,” says a source from UTV, the production house.

All this effort is not in vain. The 28-year-old actor is getting stylised after the Hollywood actor as a tribute to her.  “As bizarre as it may sound, we will be marketing the song as Kalki’s tribute to Nicole,” the source added. Wonder, if Kidman is bothered at all?
